Around 2000, I started with my first design for Kaenon. Never having designed a piece of eyewear, I was pleased that it worked out so well. Rhino, the first model, is still a best seller. Since then, I’ve gotten to design more than 20 different frames, and I established a clean line of eyeglass designs for Kaenon. Besides having the absolute best polarized lens on the market, my design language has established Kaenon as the brand to watch.

Furniture

I have always had a love for furniture design. The challenge of sculpting and developing a shape that is pleasing and innovative, and which accommodates human ergonomics, gets my creative juices flowing. Producing and distributing a piece of furniture is another challenge. I have no further plans to produce anything again in the near future, but I will most certainly keep designing.

Furniture

Maxelle (Chrome)

Inspired by the original Maxell ad, featuring a guy sitting in a Le Corbusier chair, my goal was to produce a shape that imitates the feeling and dynamic of that image. Many people, without being told what the image means, start telling me that the chair reminds them of just that ad. Painting the chair in chrome added some futurism to the design.

Folding Lounge Chair

The idea and challenge was to create a lounge chair that has a sturdy presence and yet is easily folded and rolled away. Made from teakwood, we assembled this chair to be 50 percent wider than other chairs. It even has a cupholder on one side. Don’t want to spill those drinks...

Carbon Lounge

Without any limitations, I thought of the next great lounge. There are a few out there, and with material advancements I set out to design a sculpture with a proper ergonomic fit. The inspiration was an infinity sign. Carbon fiber exterior, with a red leather insert.

Rattan Chairs

For my attempt at garden furniture, I branched out into the use of rattan. Again, applying unconventional shapes to the material and still preserving a comfortable seating was and is my goal.

Maxelle Chair

Painted in silver with a dark gray seat insert. Placed in a rustic environment. This is how I always pictured the Maxelle chair: pure elegance. The lines are classic and you have the feeling that this chair will take off with you in it.

Berlin Lounge Chair

It’s a tall order to design a lounge chair that incorporates classic lines with a new take on surfaces and seating comfort. The basic chair is very angular except for one arching line along the outside of the armrest. But it’s not just a graphic: it actually allows the seated person to drop his or her elbows, therefore relaxing the shoulders and enjoying a very comfortable seating position, which is hardly ever the case with high armrests.

Toys

Naturally, most of the toys I get to design are car related. Jada and Mattel have hired me in the past to design for their line of toys. Each line has a specific look and application, from Battle Beasts to elegant, classic '50s-inspired design. What else can a designer ask for?

Toys

Jada Battle Machines | Camaro V1

All battle-machine designs are based around licensed product. Heavily armored, something that I have done my share of, these are fun and fast exercises.

Mattel Hotwheels | Extreemester

After I had designed a dozen vehicles for Hotwheels, I asked if I could do a couple of my own and license them. This sportster is one of those designs. The nose is completely in chrome, and there are two little windshields for the passengers.

Jada Battle Machines | Classic

Not just armor over new cars, it’s almost more fun to work with older classic designs. These old cars are borderline tanks to begin with anyway.

toy 4

Toys

Jada Battle Machines | Camaro V2

Same as the V1, with different weapons and a regular paint job. I preferred the V1 for the flat paint used. Makes it look much tougher.

Mattel Hotwheel

A hotrod version of one of GM’s classic show cars. The rocket-inspired design represents the pinnacle of concept cars. Would have been fun to be a designer in the 50s.

Mattel Hotwheel | T-Cruiser/h3>

A spin-off design that I did to get around licensing issues with the design for Minority Report. It is way over the top. Later, Fox used it in "The Island," and it became the car from MR and was sold as such. Confusing, I know.

Jada Battle Machines | Helicopter

A stealth-inspired design for a helicopter as part of the battle machines. A different challenge but so much fun again. A couple of revisions and the design was done. Sweet :-)

When designing a product, especially for mass production, it encompasses all the elements that make being a designer great. Unlike the designs I create for the movies, here things have to work; they have to be safe, cost efficient, and include all the areas that marketing can invent. Here, I can take the time and really go into every detail of the project.

I am frequently contracted to design a vehicle around a golf cart. In this case it ends with a customer wanting a Corvette but is stuck with the chassis of a box. A good-looking box, I still think it would have beautifully showcased the business of solar panels.

'65 Mustang Redesign

A friend of mine contacted me and asked for my help to redesign his old Mustang. It wasn’t a Fastback, so my intentions were to give it the sex appeal of the Fastback and clean up the design where it made sense.

TFX was hired to help with the design of the H2. They hired me again to design it over a very strict package. We ended up building a scale model, and GM took it under consideration before deciding to go with the showcar of the H2, which was well received at the auto shows.

170 Foot Catamaran

Kettle One Bottle

As someone who likes a good martini, straight up with a twist, Kettle One is one of my favorites. Looking at the bottle and comparing it to the competition, I thought it needed a fresh new design. Just as an exercise I gave it a shot and sent it off to Holland.

With CamelBak the leader in the hydration backpack market, Hydrapak realized that it needed a fresh look to compete. I designed more than a dozen different packs, and with the help of studio roundhouse, we made the prototypes to the delight of Giro, who then sold the line.

We were ahead of the right time. Lee Iacocca heading the making of electric bikes. What can go wrong? After producing a perfect product that was stylish and functioned well, the company never managed to get a grip on reality, and it all went south.

Enjoying the work that James Gilbert, of Sandbox Design, and I put into this project, it still leaves us with a chuckle and a tear.
